Types of Uterine Fibroids: Submucosal, Intramural, Subserosal Explained
Fibroid type — submucosal, intramural, subserosal, or pedunculated — determines symptoms and treatment. Submucosal fibroids most often affect bleeding and fertility; subserosal fibroids may grow large with fewer period changes.
Understanding fibroid type helps you interpret your ultrasound report and discuss options with your gynaecologist. Classification is based on where the fibroid grows relative to the uterine wall and cavity.
Submucosal fibroids
These project into the uterine cavity. Even small submucosal fibroids can cause heavy bleeding, spotting, and reduced implantation success. Hysteroscopic removal is often preferred when accessible.
Intramural fibroids
The most common type, growing within the muscle wall. Larger intramural fibroids may cause pressure, heavy periods, or fertility impact depending on cavity distortion.
Subserosal fibroids
These grow on the outer surface. They can become bulky and press on bladder or bowel without changing periods much.
Pedunculated fibroids
Attached by a stalk; torsion can cause sudden severe pain needing urgent review in Hyderabad emergency or gynaecology care.
